Niger Authorities Contain Military Mutiny in Niamey

Sharjah 24 – QNA: Nigerien authorities successfully contained a military mutiny in the capital, Niamey, after a group of soldiers rebelled against officers at a key facility, according to Defence Minister Salifou Mody.

Describing the incident as a severe breach of military discipline, Mody noted that the rogue troops opened fire on sensitive sites before defense and security forces intervened swiftly to restore order.

The unrest had sparked widespread concern as heavy gunfire and explosions echoed across the city overnight and into Saturday morning.

The sounds of fighting shook areas near the main international airport, which houses Military Base 101, as well as the Plateau administrative district, home to the presidential palace and vital government institutions.

In response to the security breach, the ruling military council, the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP), issued a call for solidarity.

The council urged citizens via Facebook to remain united as armed forces continue to protect the nation.

Niger has remained under military governance since a July 2023 coup led by General Abdourahamane Tiani, which deposed the country's democratically elected president, Mohamed Bazoum.
