CAIRO, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- Six highly dangerous criminals were killed, and one police officer was injured during security raids in the Upper Egyptian governorates of Sohag and Aswan, Egypt's Interior Ministry said Thursday.
The six killed had been convicted in cases involving murder, attempted murder, drug trafficking, possession of unlicensed weapons, and armed robbery, the ministry said in a statement.
Investigations found that criminal groups involving these individuals were trafficking quantities of drugs and unlicensed firearms, according to the ministry.
Following legal procedures, security forces targeted the groups in Sohag and Aswan, killing six and arresting the remaining members, the statement said.
Police seized nearly 850 kg of narcotics, about 4,000 narcotic and psychotropic pills, and 118 firearms of various types, estimated to be worth more than 128 million Egyptian pounds (about 2.5 million U.S. dollars), the ministry said.
