Floods and Torrential Rains Kill at Least 10 in Northern and Central Sudan

August 27, 2025 (ED DAMER) – At least 10 people were killed and dozens were injured on Wednesday after heavy rains caused widespread flooding and torrential flows in northern, central, and eastern Sudan.

Several states suffer from devastating floods annually, especially during August and September, leading to significant loss of life and property amid accusations that authorities fail to take preventive measures before the rainy season begins.

The River Nile state government announced in a statement, “deaths, injuries, and losses due to rains and floods in a number of the state’s localities.” It clarified that the floods caused buildings to collapse and destroyed property in the localities of Ed Damer, Shendi, and Atbara.

The state government’s spokesman, Mustafa Mohamed Osman Al-Sharif, confirmed two deaths in the Al-Shaadeinab area of Ed Damer, with several injured receiving treatment in the intensive care unit at Ed Damer Hospital.

He revealed two deaths in the city of Ed Damer, while three people died after their homes collapsed in the village of Al-Basabeer Al-Shaikhab in Shendi locality. He also noted that floods in the Al-Zaidab administrative unit led to the collapse of several homes, which are currently being assessed.

Al-Sharif mentioned that the field emergency room, headed by Governor Mohamed Al-Badawi Abdelmajid, is continuing its work to monitor the situation on the ground and provide urgent assistance to citizens.

In Sennar state in central Sudan, multiple sources reported the death of three people due to the heavy rains.

For its part, the Sudan Doctors’ Network stated that the floods and rains caused significant property damage and displaced hundreds of families in River Nile state. It explained that the network’s field teams in the cities of Shendi, Ed Damer, and Atbara observed damage to approximately 154 homes, affecting at least 1,078 people who are now in urgent need of shelter, food, and emergency health services.

The network announced its full solidarity with those affected and called on local authorities and humanitarian organizations to expedite the delivery of urgent aid and provide basic necessities for the victims. It also warned of the health risks resulting from displacement and loss of shelter amid the spread of epidemics.

In a related context, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), a United Nations agency, reported that the flooding of the Gash River in Kassala state, eastern Sudan, displaced 3,325 people from 26 villages. It indicated that 2,975 of the displaced have taken refuge in open areas, while the rest have settled with host communities within the Talkuk Rural locality. The IOM also reported that the Gash River flood destroyed 665 homes.

Fears are growing of a recurrence of the chronic problems that most remote cities and villages suffer from during the autumn season, amid indications of heavy rainfall this month.
